This website started as a personal blog, my name is Kar-Ling. I named my website makergardener as I love making things and gardening. At the moment I am based in London with my family as it is a vibrant and exciting city. Lots of museums and different cultures that inspire my work. This website started as a personal blog writing about things I make at home like dressmaking, fabric dyeing, printing and recipes. I also write about recipes and homegrown edibles like flowers, fruit, and veg. I still do have a part-time job probably it will be till I can start making a living out of my work. Now that the blog has grown I do have lots of blog posts and I just want to focus on my creative work as there is only that much time that one has in a day.
As a result, I now mainly focus on natural dyeing and printing. I am selling my work on this website as I don’t plan to be a fabric hoarder. I have accumulated many prints over the years of printing. Therefore I will now sell natural dye-related items like garments and textile products and many more when the time is right. Here is a link to my current shop here. Do contact me for custom-made items as we all come in different sizes and requirements.
Makergardener
I started making clothes from a young age and have always been fascinated with using natural dyes since young. I remembered reading a book about dyeing with onion skins. I always love fabrics I seem to look for them all the time when I travel. I love science and maths as well. I love gardening as well I love watching plants grow. It’s the combination of these interests that made me an alchemist of natural dyes in my garden shed.
Many wonderful textile artists inspire me in my work and thank them for their generous knowledge. Natural dyes aren’t new they have been used for many centuries. I get my inspiration and ideas from old techniques and make them into new ones. I upcycle clothes as much as I can.
I welcome working with others (collaboration) only if it is relevant. Thank you very much for reading and dropping by.
